Pelvic Floor and Women’s Health

According to the Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute, pelvic rehabilitation is a non-surgical approach to rehabilitation of dysfunctions in the pelvis that contribute to bowel, bladder, sexual health and pain complaints. Pelvic rehabilitation can include a multitude of modalities including behavioral strategies, manual therapy, modalities, therapeutic exercise, education and functional re-training. The pelvic floor has 5 functions, support, sphincteric, sexual, stability, sump/pump (assist in lymphatic flow) and posture/breathing. Pelvic rehabilitation encompasses an external exam that is very similar to a typical orthopedic evaluation; we will assess your general muscular strength surrounding the sacroiliac joint as well as deep core strength and general function with activities to assess load transfer within the body. Where pelvic rehabilitation differs, is that we will also complete an internal examination of the pelvic floor musculature to assess the tone, strength and asymmetries. Through the internal exam, we can also assess level of prolapse as well as muscular trigger points and some bony abnormalities. Through the exam, both internal and external we will develop an individualized treatment plan specifically geared toward your goals to allow you to return to doing the things you love to do!
