Cardiac Rehab

Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide and affects 6 million adults each year in the United States. Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) is a 4 phase evidenced-based exercise program designed and delivered by a physical therapy team which has been shown to increase patient life expectancy by 5 years and significantly reduces emergency room visits and re-admission to the hospital following a cardiac event.  Phase 1 begins in the hospital and phase 2 and 3 continues in the outpatient physical therapy facility. Depression is a common development following heart surgery and cardiac rehab has been shown to dramatically improve recovery, compliance, and complications amongst patients. Although the research is clear about the benefits of cardiac rehabilitation, many cardiologists and cardiac surgeons do not routinely refer patients for cardiac rehab, and It is estimated that only 30% of patients participate in a supervised program.
